Owner-operated — 20+ years in the trade

The person who quotes the job is the person who does it.

Sensible Heating and Cooling is Dustan Foster — a residential HVAC contractor with more than twenty years of experience, based in Saluda and working across Western North Carolina.

The story

Twenty-plus years on these ridges

Dustan Foster has been doing residential HVAC in Western North Carolina for over two decades — long enough to have installed systems, come back a dozen winters later, and replaced them with the next generation of equipment. That kind of longevity teaches you things a training course can't: which brands hold up on a wind-blasted ridge, which crawlspaces in which coves grow mold, and why the load calculation for a Saluda house isn't the same as one for the flatlands an hour east.

The company name isn't an accident. "Sensible" means the recommendation you get is the one that makes sense for your house and your budget — not the biggest system on the truck, and not a patch job on equipment that's past saving. Sometimes the sensible answer is a repair. Sometimes it's a replacement. You'll hear the case for whichever it is, with real numbers.

How we work

What "sensible" means in practice

Residential only

Houses are the whole business — no commercial contracts to schedule around, and no sales quota steering the recommendation. The person who quotes your job is the person who shows up to do it.

Sized for the mountain, not the manual

Elevation, wind exposure, and building orientation change what a house actually needs. We run the load math against your real site conditions, because "close enough" at 2,000 feet means cold rooms in January.

Repair vs. replace, with real numbers

If a $400 part buys your system five more good years, that's the recommendation. If you'd be pouring money into a dying compressor, you'll hear that too — before the work, not after.

Rooted in Saluda

A small town at the top of the Grade

Saluda sits at the crest of the Saluda Grade — historically the steepest mainline railway grade in the United States — where the Blue Ridge drops steeply toward the piedmont. It's a town of a few hundred houses, a walkable Main Street, and weather that can differ meaningfully from one side of the ridge to the other.

Working from here isn't just an address. It means the service radius is real — Henderson, Polk, Transylvania, and Buncombe counties are all close enough to reach without heroics — and it means your contractor drives the same grades, loses power in the same ice storms, and heats a house in the same wind you do.
