Making Sense of Comfort
Sensible Heating and Cooling is an owner-operated residential HVAC company in Saluda, North Carolina. For more than twenty years, Dustan Foster has installed, repaired, and maintained systems for homeowners across Henderson, Polk, Transylvania, and Buncombe counties — where the steep mountain terrain makes comfort a little more complicated than the manuals assume.

Three kinds of work, done by the same person who answers the phone. No commercial contracts, no sales quotas — just houses, and the systems that keep them comfortable.
New systems and replacements, sized for the wind-exposed ridge or sheltered cove they're actually going into — not the catalog house.
Diagnosis and repair for every system we install — plus the ones somebody else installed. Maintenance that actually accounts for mountain winters.
Humidity control, ventilation, and filtration for tight modern houses and damp mountain crawlspaces alike.
Saluda sits at the top of the Saluda Grade, right at the dramatic elevation drop where the Blue Ridge falls away toward the South Carolina piedmont. That geography is beautiful, and it is hard on equipment.
Ridge-top homes take sustained winter wind that pulls heat out of a house far faster than the same outdoor temperature would in a sheltered valley, so heating loads here run higher than the zip code's design tables suggest. Exposed heat pumps ice their outdoor coils faster and spend more time in defrost. Cove and valley homes have the opposite problem: trapped moisture, damp crawlspaces, and summer humidity that a correctly sized system still has to wring out of the air.
Twenty-plus years of working these specific ridges and coves means we size, place, and maintain equipment for the site it actually lives on — wind-protected pad placement, defrost-aware maintenance schedules, and plain talk about when a dual-fuel setup beats a straight heat pump at elevation.

Yes. If it's a residential heat pump, gas furnace, air conditioner, or mini-split, we'll diagnose it — and if repairing it doesn't make financial sense, you'll hear that before you spend money.

Some frost on an outdoor unit in winter is normal, and the system melts it off with a defrost cycle. But up here — especially on wind-exposed ridge sites — coils ice faster and defrost harder than in sheltered lowland yards. If the unit is staying caked in ice, running defrost constantly, or blowing cold air indoors for long stretches, that's worth a service call. Placement and airflow fixes often solve it for good.
No — we're residential only, on purpose. Houses are a different craft than storefronts and office buildings, and staying focused on homes is what keeps quality high and scheduling honest.
For replacements and new installations, we look at the actual house — insulation, ductwork, exposure, elevation — before quoting, because a system sized off square footage alone is how mountain homes end up under-heated. You get a written quote with real equipment model numbers, and it doesn't change after the work starts unless we find something we couldn't see and you approve it first.
